UA Orchestra Directors

 

Melissa Allen

Mrs. Allen's undergraduate studies were at Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music, where she earned a BME.  She received her MA in Music Education from the Ohio State University.  In addition to teaching at the schools listed below, Mrs. Allen also assists with the orchestras at UA High School.  She previously taught at Columbus School for Girls, Capital University, and in the Bexley City and Chillicothe City Schools.

Nora Calvert

Mrs. Calvert has been teaching in Upper Arlington for 7 years and has taught in almost every school in the district!  Before UA, she taught in Chicago and worked with middle school orchestra students.  Mrs. Calvert loves to play her violin, and often plays for weddings, special events, and sometimes even the Broadway shows that come to town. One other cool fact? She graduated from Upper Arlington High School way back in 1987, so she is a Golden Bear too!

Jordan King

Mr. King earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the Lawrence University, Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin. In addition, he is currently pursuing a Masters of Arts in Music Education from The Ohio State University. Prior to joining the strings staff in Upper Arlington, he taught in the Oshkosh Area School District (Wisconsin). During the summer, Mr. King volunteers as a music teacher in Haiti. He is on the executive board of BLUME-Haiti (Building Leaders Using Music Education-Haiti), a 501(c)3 organization that works to support and develop music schools throughout Haiti.

Chris Lape
Mr. Lape earned a Master's degree in viola performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He also holds undergraduate degrees in violin performance  and music education from The Ohio State University. In addition to teaching in UA, Mr. Lape is the music director of the Newark-Granville Chamber Strings and serves on the faculties of the OSU Morning String Student Workshop and OSU Viola Day.  Mr. Lape is the principal violist of the Newark-Granville Symphony and often performs with the Springfield Symphony and Opera Project Columbus. Prior to teaching in Upper Arlington, he taught orchestra in the Dublin City Schools and Newark City Schools.

Gretchen Zunic

Mrs. Zunic has a BM from Bowling Green State University and a MA from The Ohio State University.  She has been with Upper Arlington since 1995, and has also taught in Findlay City and Hilliard City School Districts.

Ed Zunic

Mr. Zunic holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Bowling Green State University.  In addition to teaching at UA, he is currently director of the Springfield Youth Symphony and a cellist in the Columbus String Quartet.  He has served as the OSTA Middle School Camp Director, OMEA Creative Events Chair, OMEA Orchestra Affairs Chair and UAHS music department chair.  Mr. Zunic previously taught at Ector County Schools (TX), Lima City Schools (OH) and Newark City Schools (OH).  HIs awards include: "One of Five People to Watch" by the Upper Arlington News, OSTA "Public School Teacher of the Year" and the BGSU "Distinguished Graduate Award."  His compositions and arrangements can be purchased from the Lorenz Corporation and Alfred-Highland/Etling Publishing.  Mr. Zunic is a frequent guest conductor and orchestra clinician.
